AWARDS TO 10 ARTISTS PRESENTED BY
ARTFOCUS AT METRO HALL ROTUNDA
ARTFOCUS 6TH ANNUAL FALL ARTIST'S SHOW was
held in Metro Hall/ Rotunda ( 55 John St at King) in Toronto , October 15,
16, &17, l997. Staged in the handsome circular
ground floor Rotunda of Metro Hall in the heartof the downtown business and
theatre area, the event showcased the work of 40 visual artists from across Ontario
and drew a crowd of several thousand 'art aficianos' over the 3-day period.
Produced in prominent central downtown buildings since 1992 by Toronto's ARTFOCUS
MAGAZINE, the show is planned as an indoor version of the populist annual Toronto
City Hall Outdoor Show.
Guest feature, on view in the centre of the Rotunda,
was a dramatic 6 ft high glass & metal interactive sculpture portraying musician
FRANK ZAPPA by former ARTFOCUS award-winner, Francis
MUSCAT of Uxbridge, Ontario .

Returning to the show were ARTFOCUS award-winner,
jazz musician/ artist Alan GAENSBAUER (who played at the opening) & artists Deborah
GILBERT, Stephen GILLBERRY, Ben NG, Domenic PIRONE & Anna SKOF.
New exhibitors included Peter BANKS, Lucy BONFANTI, Colleen CLANCY, Vicki COWAN,Melissa
FREW, Darby GOULDEN, Betty HERMAN, Peter JOHNSON, Heather Jean MCKENZIE, Inna MEDOW,
Helena PYATKOVSKY, Emilio SPALLA, Lilija TAMOSAUSKAS, Maya VINOKUROV & Terri
WINICK.
As in the spring, several artists groups
participated including 11 members of the DUNDALK HIGHLANDS GUILD STUDIO, the NORTH
AMERICAN JOURNAL OF ORIENTAL ARTS& the CARIBBEAN ART STUDIO representing Haitian
artists in Canada .
ARTIST'S AWARDS in all media were selected
by Jurors Morton KATZ, Sculptor/ Architect & President SCULPTOR'S SOCIETY OF
CANADA; Amy ROUILLARD, Director MANIFESTUDIO (Organizer of the Kensington Market
Art Fair); and Virginia MACDONNELL, Critic & Curator DELEON WHITE GALLERY.

BEST IN ENCAUSTICS, donated by R & F Encaustics (New York),
awarded to Vicki COWAN
BEST IN PRINTMAKING, a book donated by ARTFOCUS,
awarded to Colleen CLANCEY.
BEST IN PASTEL OR CHALK, donated by Light-Fast Artists Pigments (Ajax), awarded to
Deborah GILBERT.
The 1ST ORIENTAL ARTS JOURNAL AWARD donated
by businessman Steve Eng was also presented at the show to Li RIBO.
AWARDS were presented at the GALA OPENING
in the Rotunda on October 15 from 5- 7 P.M. Media coverage included CITY TV,
CBC RADIO, NOW magazine & THE GLOBE & MAIL. Refreshments & Cash Bar
were sponsored by METRO CAFE/ VINEYARDS BISTRO .
